What is a cyst?

Cysts are sac-like structures that can form in various tissues of the body. In the skin, they are typically filled with dead skin cells, sebum and skin oils. While cysts are generally non-cancerous and harmless, they can sometimes cause discomfort or require medical attention.

Types of cysts

In the skin, there are a few common types of cysts:

  1. Epidermoid cysts: These are the most common type of cysts and often develop in areas where hair follicles are present, such as the face, neck, and trunk. They form when skin cells multiply within a confined space.

  2. Sebaceous cysts: Also known as keratin cysts, these form from the oil-producing (sebaceous) glands in the skin. They are usually found on the face, neck, and torso. Unlike epidermoid cysts, they are filled with a thick, yellowish substance.

  3. Pilar cysts: These cysts originate from hair follicles and are typically found on the scalp. They contain a sticky, gel-like substance and can be hereditary.

What causes cysts?

The formation of cysts can be attributed to various factors:

  • Blockage of Glands or Ducts: This is a common cause, where the natural flow of oil in the skin is obstructed, leading to the accumulation of material and the formation of a cyst.

  • Infection: In some cases, cysts can develop as a result of an infection, when the body's immune response encapsulates the infectious material.

  • Genetics: Certain types of cysts, such as pilar cysts, can have a hereditary component, suggesting a genetic predisposition.

How do dermatologists treat cysts?

At Coastal Pacific Dermatology, we have several options for treating cysts, depending on the type, size, location, and any associated symptoms. For cysts that are red and inflamed, we can perform a non-invasive corticosteroid injection that can produce relief in 24-48 hours. For cysts that are large, deep, or painful, we can perform a skin excision to remove the cysts and it’s contents. In select cases, we are pleased to offer a minimally invasive removal option using a keyhole technique to minimize scarring.
